Abstract

Film is a form of mass communication media that functions not only as entertainment, but also as a medium for conveying moral, social, and cultural messages through various signs and symbols embedded in cinematic narratives. This research is motivated by the representation of loyalty and revenge in John Wick 1, which is portrayed through the emotional relationship between John Wick and his late wife, Helen, as well as John’s transformation after losing the symbol of loyalty in his life. This study aims to analyze the representation of loyalty and revenge in John Wick 1 using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory, which includes denotation, connotation, and myth. This research applies a constructivist paradigm with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data collection techniques were conducted through observation of selected scenes from John Wick 1, documentation, and literature study. The results show that loyalty in the film is represented as a form of emotional faithfulness, love, and commitment that continues to exist even after death separates John Wick and Helen. Meanwhile, revenge is represented as an emotional and moral response to the destruction of symbols of loyalty, self-esteem, and personal identity. At the mythological level, John Wick 1 constructs the notion that loyalty is a sacred value capable of shaping human identity, while revenge is represented as an attempt to restore honor and the meaning of life after experiencing profound loss. This study concludes that John Wick 1 does not merely present violence as visual entertainment, but also constructs cultural meanings related to loyalty, loss, honor, and revenge through its cinematic system of signs.
