Abstract

Miserable is a deep sadness that oriented towards feelings that are experienced inappropriately and dissastisfied in the reality of life. A miserable state tends to lead to the loss of something of value, loss of affection, or failure to archieve goals. Conveying sadness is now included in electronic media such as short movies. The short movie Banyu by Richard Suwae is a film that tells about the life of Sri, a woman who lives with her son Banyu. A child born from a certain case on him. The purpose of this study is to find out the scenes that represent the meaning of misery through an analysis of the stage of denotation, connotation, and myth. This study uses a qualitative method with the semiotic approach of Roland Barthes. The scene that is the object of research consist of five scenes that can signify the meaning of being miserable. The result of the study show that pregnant victims prefer to have an abortion because they are worried that the child will experience poor living conditions, lack of law enforcement for the poor and the poor, and being a prostitute is not a desire, but a compulsion.
