The development of the creative industry has encouraged entertainment to be understood not merely as a form of recreation, but also as a medium for conveying social and political criticism. One form of entertainment that has developed in this context is stand-up comedy, which is often used to address various social, legal, and political issues. One performance that is interesting to examine is Mens Rea, performed by the comedian Pandji Pragiwaksono. This study aims to understand how audiences interpret the messages conveyed in the performance through the perspective of reception analysis. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Stuart Hall’s encoding–decoding analytical framework. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) conducted in stages to observe how audiences position their readings of the performance and the possibility of changes in interpretation during the discussion process. The results indicate that audience reception of Mens Rea can be categorized into three reading positions: dominant, negotiated, and oppositional. The negotiated position is the most prominent, as audiences accept the social criticism presented while adjusting it to their cultural values and personal views. The discussion process also reveals a dynamic pattern of meaning-making in audience interpretations of media messages.
